Best Picture
Argo
Django Unchained
Lincoln
Les Miserables
Life of Pi
Silver Linings Playbook
Zero Dark Thirty
I’ll come out and say it now – Lincoln will win. It has the momentum of the 150th anniversary of the Civil War and Emancipation Proclamation – and the somewhat ongoing comparison of him and Obama. Oh and did I mention the election? All play a small part. It’s all there.
Also – the academy now can choose up to 10 nominees, so it no longer has to stick to 5.
Best Actor
Daniel Day-Lewis – Lincoln
Ben Affleck – Argo
Denzel Washington – Flight
Hugh Jackman – Les Miserables
Ang Lee – Life of Pi
Is there even a doubt?
Best Actress
Jennifer Lawrence – Silver Linings Playbook
Marion Cotillard – Rust and Bone
Rachel Weisz- The Deep Blue Sea
Jessica Chastain – Zero Dark Thirty
Maggie Smith – Quartet
Uh, I seriously am stuck on this one.
Best Supporting Actor
Alan Arkin – Argo
Philip Seymour Hoffman – The Master
Tommy Lee Jones – Lincoln
Christoph Waltz – Django Unchained
Leonardo DiCaprio – Django Unchained
Best Supporting Actress
Sally Field – Lincoln
Helen Hunt – The Sessions
Nicole Kidman – The Paperboy
Amy Adams – The Master
Anne Hathaway – Les Miserables
I can’t decide if Anne Hathaway will be placed in the main or supporting category. This one could really go either way for me. I don’t know the intricacies of the categories. But Jennifer Aniston was nominated for main in Friends and won – so that may play out here too.
Best Director
Steven Spielberg – Lincoln
Ben Affleck – Argo
Kathryn Bigelow- Zero Dark Thirty
Ang Lee- Life of Pi
Quentin Tarantino – Django Unchained
Best Adapted Screenplay
Argo
Life of Pi
Lincoln
Silver Linings Playbook
Best Original Screenplay
Looper
The Master
Zero Dark Thirty
Promised Land
Django Unchained
Wow, nothing really jumps out at me at this point as to who should be the winner.
Best Foreign Language
Amour
A Royal Affair
The Intouchables
Kon-Tiki
Rust and Bone
I have heard nothing but good things for Amour.
Animated Feature
Brave
Wreck-It Ralph
Rise of the Guardians
Hotel Transylvania
I won’t lie. Since the Academy upped their nomination date, this is way harder than it once was to predict. Really stretches my brain!
I had to rely heavily on this year’s Golden Globes nominations as a gauge. Since I don’t know how much they yet correlate, I took a chance. We’ll see how well I do.
You’ll notice I couldn’t even muster 5 choices in one category.
I do believe that Zero Dark Thirty and Les Miz will get a lot, but not win a lot. (see above comment under best picture)
Nominations will be announced this Thursday at 5:30am PST.
