Red Cross Real Hero Breakfast

Real heroes breakfast

Two Thursdays ago, hundreds of people gathered inside Harrah’s Reno to celebrate the everyday hero.

Each year the northern Nevada chapter of the American Red Cross acknowledges those people who (non-selfishly) help others in need.

I was recognized in the animal category for helping a mama duck in distress. One rainy April morning I noticed her squawking near a storm drain. After I stopped my car, I noticed seven ducklings stuck inside a storm drain and called animal control. While I didn’t end up doing the grunt work, it was my animal intuition that alerted me to something wrong.

I have no idea how long she called out for help. I actually created attention for her by sitting on the wet sidewalk waiting for animal control to come.

I’d do it again in a heartbeat. I love animals.

And although I didn’t ‘win,’ I’m still very honored by the recognition. It’s something that can never be taken away from me.
