Wisteria Lane Faces Dead End

ABC confirmed reports that “Desperate Housewives” will be starting its eighth and final season come fall.

“We want to make sure it has its victory lap,” ABC Entertainment President Paul Lee said in making the announcement on Sunday.

“Desperate Housewives,” a glossy prime-time soap opera with an ensemble cast including Teri Hatcher and Eva Longoria, made a pop-culture and ratings splash when it premiered in 2004 but has since seen a fall-off in the ratings.

Series star Felicity Huffman got the bad news on Friday in an e-mail from her co-star Marcia Cross.

Soon after that, she got the call from “Housewives” creator Marc Cherry.

Huffman, who plays frustrated stay-at-home mom Lynette, said she shed a few tears at her kitchen table while consoled by her husband, actor William H. Macy.

Describing her response late Sunday night, Huffman said she was sad that the saucy soap opera would be ending after eight seasons. But she’s also exhilarated by potential story lines in the show’s home stretch.
