Reno TV Sports Director, Co-Worker Dies After Accident

My heart breaks for his wife and three sons. He was such a great guy – didn’t have a mean bone in his body. Always had great stories about his boys too.

I last talked to him on Friday when I complimented him on his tie – the lighting was great in the hallway we were in so I said, ‘that’s a great lookin’ tie sir!’ Just walked by, ‘thank you.’

I first became acquainted with him while I was an intern at KTVN in 1998. He was a photographer then. By the time I was hired in May 2000, he’d moved up into an on air sports position.

I’ll miss his desk pencil tapping, the yelling during his beloved Steelers’ games – especially on Monday nights – and his jokes. Always loved disguising his voice when he’d talk to me on the phone – and I’d fall for it every time! So great at that – and he’d never break character. I always promised him I’d get him back!

And now —

It just shows you how fragile life is and how you must live it to the fullest while you have the chance.

The sports director of Reno’s CBS television  affiliate has been killed in what police are calling a hit-and-run accident.

Police say JK Metzker died Sunday afternoon at a Reno hospital from injuries suffered when he was struck while crossing a street late Saturday night near the football stadium where he had just covered Nevada’s 42-28 victory over Hawaii.

Police say 23-year-old Ryan Rhea of Sparks was arrested Sunday and booked into the Washoe County Jail on one felony count of hit-and-run causing death.

Investigators said alcohol appears to be a factor in the accident and additional charges may be filed pending results of blood tests.

The 41-year-old Metzker had worked for KTVN-TV in Reno for  nearly 14 years. He’s survived by his wife, Jaimie, and three sons. (AP)

KTVN has set up an account through Wells Fargo Banks for donations to JK Metzker’s family. It will open for donations beginning tomorrow at any Wells Fargo location.

Donors should inform tellers the money is for a donation account and the name of the account is the ‘Metzker Family Fund.’ (acct # 5867974627)

A memorial service is being held this Friday at 2pm at Our Lady of the Snows at 1125 Lander Street.
