15 Documentaries Advance in the Oscar Race

As usual, Oscar’s shortlist for documentaries is notable for what’s not on it as well as for what is.

A few of the 15 docs that remain in the running for Oscar nominations are the Harry Belafonte film “Sing Your Song,” along with “Project Nim,” about raising a chimp as a person, “Buck” about a horse whisperer and “We Were Here” about the early days of the AIDS epidemic.

Some of the documentaries that were snubbed include Cameron Crowe’s “Pearl Jam Twenty,” Morgan Spurlock’s “The Greatest Movie Ever Sold,” Werner Herzog’s “Into the Abyss,” “Project Elmo,” “Senna” about racecar driver Ayrton Senna and “The Interrupters” from the director of “Hoop Dreams.”

Five documentaries will be nominated for the Oscar.

They’ll be announced January 24.
