Movies, Songs Eligible for Oscars

Songs from movies like “The Help,” “Cars 2,” the new “Footloose,” “Gnomeo and Juliet,” “The Muppets” and a lot more are eligible to be nominated for an Academy Award. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has put 39 songs on the list.

At least two of the songs are co-written by actresses who star in the movies. But they don’t sing them. Glenn Close co-wrote “Lay Your Head Down” for her soon-to-be-released movie, “Albert Nobbs.” It’s sung by Sinead O’Connor. With Melissa Manchester, Mary Steenburgen co-wrote “Rainbird” for the recent film, “Dirty Girl.” Manchester sings it.

As many as five songs could be nominated when Oscar nominations are revealed January 24.

And if you want to watch every movie from 2011 that’s eligible to be nominated for an Oscar, you won’t see daylight for a long time. There are 265 feature films eligible for the 2011 Academy Awards.

To make the list the movies have to play in a commercial movie theater in Los Angeles County by midnight, December 31, and begin a minimum run of seven consecutive days. The films must be more than 40 minutes long. They also have to meet some technical requirements.

The Oscars will be awarded February 26. (AP)
