Conan O’Brien to Host MTV Movie Awards

Conan O’Brien will be serving up buckets of golden popcorn.

O’Brien announced Tuesday on his TBS talk show “Conan” that he’s hosting this year’s MTV Movie Awards. The annual movie celebration that honors winners with popcorn-shaped trophies is scheduled for April 13 at the Nokia Theatre in downtown Los Angeles.

The comedian joked in a statement that he’s honored to host “MTV’s second most prestigious awards show.”

This year’s nominees in such silly categories as best kiss and best fight will be announced Thursday.

It marks the first time O’Brien has hosted the MTV Movie Awards. He hosted the Primetime Emmy Awards in 2002 and 2006.

Past hosts of the MTV Movie Awards have included Jimmy Fallon, Aziz Ansari, Russell Brand and Rebel Wilson. (AP)

‘Hunger Games’ Big Winner at MTV Movie Awards

“The Hunger Games” is the big winner at the MTV Movie Awards.

It won for the best fight, on-screen transformation, and male and female performances for stars Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson.

The movie didn’t totally eat up the competition.

“Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows — Part 2” won golden popcorn-shaped trophies for best cast and best hero.

“The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn — Part 1” won for movie of the year and best kiss.

Other winners in the fan balloting included Shailene Woodley for breakthrough performance for “The Descendants” and Jennifer Aniston as best on-screen dirtbag for “Horrible Bosses.”

Charlie Sheen’s New Sitcom to Debut June 28 on FX

Charlie Sheen will be stirring up a new round of laughs when “Anger Management” arrives June 28.

FX on Tuesday set the premiere date for Sheen’s new sitcom, which returns him to weekly TV after his noisy exit last season from the CBS hit “Two and a Half Men.” Announced last summer, “Anger Management” is loosely based on the 2003 movie about a non-traditional therapist.

Fox says two episodes will air June 28. It has ordered 10 episodes for the first season.

Scheduled the same night are the second-season premiere of the comedy “Wilfred,” starring Elijah Wood and Jason Gann, and the third-season premiere of “Louie,” starring Louis C.K.

Rounding out the night is the premiere of “Strangely Uplifting,” a new comedy starring Russell Brand. (AP)

Beyonce Among 178 Invited to Join Film Academy

Beyonce Knowles, Russell Brand, David Duchovny and “King’s Speech” director Tom Hooper have been invited to join theAcademyofMotion Picture Artsand Sciences.

The film academy said Friday it has invited 178 film-industry workers to join its ranks this year.

Documentarian Tim Hetherington, who was nominated for an Oscar this year and then killed inLibyatwo months after the ceremony, was invited posthumously to join the academy.

Other invitees include actors Bradley Cooper, Gerard Butler, Mila Kunis, Jennifer Garner, Jesse Eisenberg and Ellen Page; “The Kids Are All Right” writer-director Lisa Cholodenko; writer Aaron Sorkin; Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige and the academy’s new chief operations officer, Ric Robertson.

The film academy has just under 6,000 voting members.

MTV Video Music Awards Will Honor Michael Jackson

The MTV Video Music Awards will pay tribute to one of its early icons. The show will open with a tribute to Michael Jackson performed by his sister, Janet.

The trailer to the documentary about Jackson’s rehearsals for his London show, “This Is It,” will premiere during the awards.

Beyonce’ and Lady Gaga are the ones to beat for the awards. They’ve got nominations each.

They’re both up for video of the year, competing against Britney Spears, Eminem and Kanye West.

Russell Brand returns as host.

Performers include Beyonce’, Lady Gaga, Taylor Swift, Muse, Green Day and Pink. Alicia Keys and Jay-Z will perform together.

Eminem is expected to make a special appearance, and that’s significant, given his run-in with Sacha Baron Cohen during the MTV Movie Awards in May.

Lady Gaga, Beyonce’ Lead MTV Video Music Awards

Lady Gaga and Beyonce’ lead the way for the MTV Video Music Awards.

They have nine nominations each. Britney Spears has seven, while Kanye West, Eminem and Coldplay have four each.

Lady Gaga’s video for “Poker Face” and “Single Ladies” by Beyonce’ are up for video of the year. They will face off against “Womanizer” by Spears, Eminem’s “We Made You” and West’s “Love Lockdown.”

Viewers can vote in the general categories beginning today through September 13 at

The awards will be handed out in New York on September 13. Comedian Russell Brand will return as host.
